How I Deal with Writer’s Block

Hello once more readers,

Today I wanted to take a few moments to share with you all just how I try to cope with not being able to come up with my own words to write down. I think that the simple act of writing some each day is an important way to break through whatever is blocking your creative thinking or writing. Here are some of my more structured ways of trying to break through my own blockages.

The first thing that I do each day is to start my writing in my journal. I make sure to write a full page in there each day. I like doing this to help in many aspects of my daily life, including getting some of those creative juices flowing better. My journal is where I pour out all of my thoughts in a stream of consciousness format, and simply let the words flow without worrying about what I am writing. Another good thing about writing in a journal is the fact that as I look at some of my older entries, I can get some ideas of things to write about in other ways such as topics for posts and other uses. I would highly recommend giving journaling a try if you are looking for an excuse to just write more each day as well.

Another thing that I am doing to help make sure I am writing every day is to copy down music lyrics or recipes. I have already written down the lyrics for many of my favorite songs, and have greatly enjoyed getting a chance to better memorize their lyrics. I have also started to write down some of my favorite recipes along with family recipes that my family has used since long before I was born. Even though food has been a passion of mine for a long time, I have only recently started to write down the recipes for my own keeping. The family recipes are almost like time machines for me, because every time I make one of them I remember all of the good times that I had with my grandparents. Writing down recipes and music lyrics by hand also helps to make it easier to remember them. I also find it easier to read from a physical cookbook while I am actively cooking, as I can just open the book and set it where I can read the entire recipe without having to touch anything. I think that taking the time to learn family recipes and writing them down is a great way to connect with your remaining family, and also your relatives who also grew up eating these same recipes.

Another way that I try to break through my creative blocks is working on the drafts for these posts. While I may not be posting very consistently, I am working on posts nearly every day. When I am really experiencing writer’s block, I will go through nearly a dozen drafts of my posts. That being said, the more I am working on these posts, the easier writing is becoming for me in general.

One more way that I am trying to break through my creative blocks is to copy another book. This is a bit of a daunting task I admit, but I believe that by only trying to work a little at a time and expecting a single full page written down each day, I will be able to tackle this task. The book that I chose to copy down is a non-fiction book, but I find my creative thoughts coming easier as I am working on it. Part of why I have chosen the book that I did is the fact that I was able to purchase a digital copy of it, but have not been able to find in a physical printing for an affordable price.

I hope that if you are going through your own challenges with any sort of creative endeavors, you can find some ideas of ways to break through it. I know that writing and posting this has helped me! My next post is going to be about the pen sleeves that I use when I am carrying my pens with me each day. If there are any topics you would like to hear my thoughts on, please feel free to leave a comment and I will try to reply as soon as I can. Until next time readers. Stay happy and healthy, and keep on learning!

Shaggy
